He's also never had a problem with a rogue helmsman steering a valuable ship onto the rocks of a harbor either, which is a common enough occurrence. Sailing helmsmen maintain more of their individuality than starship ones, and they have enough of their own minds to cause problems. That's not why he doesn't use them, but it makes a convenient excuse.]
